@Tom Harris:

And what, exactly is wrong with having created said website, provided that it meets with all legal requirements? It might not be your taste, but provided it's legal, I don't see what you have to complain about. What I do know is that if I were a web designer, so long as they didn't create illegal sites and paid the bills, that's OK by me.

Anyway, as others have pointed out, registering a domain name and coding a website does not make you responsible for the content thereof. Most sites now have a content managment front-end where the actual owner of the site will upload whatever *cough* 'content' he or she wishes.

The prospect of the forthcoming general election depresses the hell out of me. To quote Craig Murray:

'There is a substantial percentage of the population who wish to see a very early withdrawal from the occupation of Afghanistan, who want genuinely firm measures against the casino banking economy, who are very sceptical about the direction the European Union has gone, and who do not want to waste many scores of billions of dollars on a nuclear submarine system which can wipe out half the world's population instantaneously and the rest shortly thereafter.'

I am in that substantial percentage.

Yet no major political party of England is (Scotland and Wales have different political topographies) prepared to follow these - to them - radical paths.

So all we are being given is a choice between three different shades of the same colour.

We wrote to that nice Mr Cameron and invited him (as our sitting MP, not as leader of HM Opposition) on to our podcast to share his taste in music and whatever views he felt able to share with our 158,000 audience. We've been in a holding pattern on that for about six months.

It wasn't as if we were going to ambush him with any difficult questions...

There's only one thing worse than being talked about and that's not being talked about.

Thanks for the analysis. I am going to redo certain aspects of my website and expand my policies in time for the election (assuming the 6th May is still the date).

It's always an uphill struggle being an Independent, but, win or lose, at least I can say that I have tried.

Didn't know you were a local boy, Adam!

Yes, we quite agree that more people should run as candidates, but like we say - it's hard to get anywhere if you want to be independent, because you may not have the financial and PR support that candidates for mainstream parties have. You've got to have a tough skin, a willingness to beg for donations, and an acceptance of the fact that you may well come last...

There are many, including us, who would be interested in getting involved, but who aren't willing to face all of those facts. Hence our admiration for the likes of Mr Wesson, the libertarian mummer, who is willing to proceed despite his lack of party affiliation.

As someone who grew up in Witney it's good to see Mr Wesson having a go. Partly to take some points away from Cameron but mainly because of what it stands for.

Surely, in a healthy democracy, when an election is called we shouldn't be moaning about the lack of candidates on offer..we should be running! In a healthy democracy the taxi driver or the nurse feel they have a right to stand as much as the communications slimeball or Westminster careerist.

Correct me if I'm wrong but I think the deposit now stands at £500 to enter? Criminally upped from £250 when Thatcher got a scare in the 1980s...

Leaving aside the shoddy standards of journalism at the Mail, this story captures the zeitgeist.
We live in an age where someone can be famous for being famous and where news corporations create the content they report thereby distorting our perception of 'real' news.
Take the John Terry 'story' for example: the red tops scream about the shenanigans; Sky TV news repeats the flimsy story ('footballer shags mate's ex' rates a 'so what?' at best) and 'pressure grows' on the England manager to do something. This self-fuelling goes 'round a couple of times, reaches critical mass and Capello sacks the adulterer. Meanwhile the red tops can shriek that 'English football is in crisis' - of their manufacture...
Lazy journalism but also a sign o f the times

Tom Harris - you need to learn some facts before posting such condescending drivel like your message to Lottie. Further to mark's reply I would like to point out that in any website there are two elements, the infrastructure (design and code) and the content. Mr Smith was involved, by his own admission and from the HDM's pathetic investigation, only in producing the infrastructure, NOT the content. It is also perfectly normal for people who build websites for clients to own the domain names because the clients usually do not have the expertise to do that. Mr Smith's business is perfectly legitimate, and this whole story stinks of bad journalism and moral bullying. I hope you will now have the good grace to apologise to Lottie for your insulting post.

A member of this page has insinuated that one of the websites taken down after HDMs non story was teensinbraces.com. This poster may claim to have info regarding this website. That domain Expired in june 2009 and has not been registered since. According to internet archive resources the domain was only active for one ...month back in march 2007.
